![]() The Twilight Zone is, believe it or not, one of those American creations that unites people of all generations, regions and perspectives. You, dear reader, could well be one of those people yourself. TWILIGHT ZONE MARATHON TVJust try listening to the radio or watching a network TV sitcom this week if you don’t believe me.įrom a lifetime of conversations with people from all walks of life and all generations, I know that so many of us love this show and will always stop their channel surfing to see which episode is on if they hear Rod Serling’s voice. Being creative is a risk, an adventure, and if you do it right, a gift to the world and potentially to the future – it’s far more profitable to be formulaic in this world. The Twilight Zone is a personal favorite for several reasons, most notably the originality and creativity that went into the stories. With the Fourth now behind us, I’ll focus on a completely unrelated but somewhat popular rite of summer – the annual Twilight Zone marathon they show on cable TV every July 4th. A desert climate threatens two explorers stranded in Peru’s Valley of the Volcanoes on “Dual Survival” (9 p.m., Discovery).Last week I wrote an editorial citing a few of my favorite Independence Day quotes.Dan fights crime on the cheap on “The Good Guys” (8 p.m., Fox).A controversial talk-radio host takes his guest hostage on “Flashpoint” (8 p.m., CBS).The Noisettes, Lyle Lovett and Doves perform on “Live From Abbey Road” (7 p.m., Sundance).A civil war grave hides remains of a much more recent vintage on “Bones” (7 p.m., Fox).Taylor fears for his team’s safety on “Friday Night Lights” (7 p.m., NBC).And USA devotes the entire day to “Royal Pains” (11 p.m. Syfy unfurls 13 consecutive episodes of “Merlin” (9 a.m. Catch 10 episodes of “Whale Wars” (7 p.m. On the eve of the three-day Independence Day weekend, several cable stations go into marathon mode.A “horse of a different color,” if you will. One of the oddest things about “Oz” is the fact that for the first two-thirds of the movie, the dramatic action is propelled by the songs and then, after the Cowardly Lion dons his cape and sings “King of the Forest,” the songs cease entirely and we seem to be an entirely different film. Perhaps that’s what happens when you spend too much time whiling away the hours, consulting with the flowers. TWILIGHT ZONE MARATHON MOVIEA much different take on the movie emerged in the 1990s when adventurous viewers synched up the movie to Pink Floyd’s 1973 album “Dark Side of the Moon” and seemed to “discover” new aspects to both cultural artifacts. Some theorized that the “Oz” books were an elaborate political parable about the monetary policy of the Progressive Era. Much like “It’s Wonderful Life,” this Technicolor fantasy did not become a classic until the advent of television and as audiences committed it to memory through continual repeats.įew films or stories have been subject to as much scrutiny and interpretation. Look for surviving cast members and Munchkins to reflect on the making of the movie in the documentary short “Memories of Oz” (9 p.m.). As it has for several years now, TCM celebrates the Fourth with a reairing of the beloved 1939 musical fantasy “The Wizard of Oz” (7 p.m., TCM).Performers include comedian George Lopez, Dick Van Dyke and his quartet, the Vantastix, Renee Fleming, Lionel Richie and Kelly Clarkson. Look for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in the audience. The site of one of the nation’s greatest tragedies - the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln - has for years been the venue for a variety show of comedy and song. Ty Burrell, who plays the clueless Dad Phil Dunphy on “Modern Family,” hosts another curious holiday tradition - “America Celebrates July 4th at Ford’s Theatre” (8 p.m., ABC).The retitled network will air a mini-marathon of “Greatest American Hero” on Sunday instead.Īs if already aware of the wailing and gnashing of teeth from “Zone” fans, SyFy has assured us that the “Twilight Zone” marathon will air “later this year.” So it’s with a heavy heart that I warn the TV faithful that there will be no “Twilight Zone” marathon on SyFy this Fourth of July weekend. Few holidays have as many traditions as Independence Day. ![]()

Surround-sound receivers driving output to five or more speakers immerse you into movies or music as they were originally recorded. You can also get the same separation of sound when using headphones and earphones. Home-theater A/V receivers decode the audio signals that are recorded on different media, such as DVDs and Blu-ray discs. The formats include the Dolby Digital and DTS:X lines, each of which delivers reproductions of recorded audio for a specific number of receiver channels. Many receivers are equipped for more sophisticated audio signaling from formats such as Dolby Atmos for overhead speakers and the immersive surround sound of 3D audio being offered by Auro Technologies. #Digital input audio tuner 1080p#Receivers also come with multiple HDMI ports for transferring video formats on various media to TVs and monitors, including resolution from 1080p to 3D to 4K. Receivers for Internet, Wireless, and Multi-Room Sound Many can handle the most advanced video augmentation, including high-dynamic range (HDR) contrast boosting with Dolby Vision and HLG, 4:4:4 color saturation, and 21:9 ultrawide format. #Digital input audio tuner Bluetooth#The vast majority of receivers offer Ethernet connectivity for music streaming and network sharing, and Wi-Fi router and Bluetooth connectivity for single and multi-room sound systems with wireless speakers. The receiver sends the video on to your television and sends the audio to the decoder. The decoder sorts out the different sound channels from the video signal, and then sends the information to amplifiers for each sound-channel output. These amplifiers are connected to the appropriate speaker or speakers.ĭigital decoders and analog decoders handle the job differently. Digital surround sound is quite simple: When a company is producing a Dolby Digital ® program, for example, they encode six separate audio channels, specifically balanced for a Dolby Digital speaker setup. Drawing on Foucault’s perspective of governmentality, this paper argues that these strategies represent distinct but overlapping apparatuses of neoliberal governmentality that are representative of broader tendencies within environmental governance today.Įnglish inshore fishers have long campaigned through the New Under 10m Fishermen's Association to have a fair share of the UK's fishing opportunities and to be involved in inshore fisheries management. Tradeable quota systems, eco-accreditation schemes and community-based resource management have all emerged as managerial strategies for inciting the active participation of fishers in this ‘common’ project of sustainable development. Central to this transition is the active role that fishers are expected to play in sustainably managing the fish stocks they exploit while adapting to ‘green’ market opportunities. This contradiction has given rise to a new political economy of ‘improvements’ that seeks to sustain the biological health of commercially targeted fish populations while maintaining an economically profitable fishing industry. This has become evident in the European fisheries, where after decades of exploitation greatly intensified since the 1960s, the extractive demands of the fishing industry have caught up with the reproductive capacities of most commercially targeted fish stocks. Since the 1970s, biopolitical concerns have shifted towards non-human populations and the reproduction of natural resources and ecosystems. An insight on interest group influence and its conditions contributes to our understanding of the complex dynamics of the environmental policy process as well as its implications for policy adaptation to environmental change.įoucault’s account of the emergence of biopolitics in the late 18th century helps frame the political economy of ‘improvements’ as an environmental project linked to the well-being of the population. Findings identify the important role of coalition-building and informational lobbying for environmental interest group success in exploiting favorable sociopolitical conditions and influencing reform outcomes. The study involves interviews with interest group representatives, policy experts and decision-makers, document analysis of interest group statements and EU legislative documents. It traces the activity of interest group coalitions to understand how they achieved influence under a changing policy context. This paper provides an in-depth study of the 2013 European Union Common Fisheries Policy reform − a policy change characterized by active interest group participation. Existing research offers conflicting evidence in regards to the different ways in which interest groups may affect change. This paper draws attention to interest groups and the mechanism through which they influence policy change. Much research has focused on understanding institutional dynamics or the role of specific participants in the policy process. However the relationship between environmental change and policy is complicated. Adaptation of environmental policies to often unexpected crises is an important function of sustainable governance arrangements. ![]() ![]() Proper angulation in the leg joints also helps to absorb the shocks produced during each step and increases the productive life-span of the bull.įigure 1 illustrates the various parts of the bull’s reproductive tract. A moderate angle in the hock joints is necessary for the bull to thrust properly after mounting. Any disease that impairs the mobility of the bull hinders reproductive performance.Ī conformational problem commonly associated with poor breeding performance is extreme straightness of the rear leg (post-legged). Structural soundness, including functional feet, legs and associated joints, is critical for the bull to effectively travel the breeding pasture and service females in heat. Poor health can affect libido, mating ability, and semen production and quality. General health and structural soundness are important aspects of fertility. There are 5 general factors that can affect bull fertility:Īll are important and a deficiency in any category will negatively affect fertility. The reproductive development and performance of young bulls has gained attention as beef breeders attempt to accelerate improvement of economic traits in cattle and reduce costs by using younger sires. Although bulls that have reached puberty can breed, reproductive capacity increases as the bull continues to mature. Bulls exhibit first sexual interest about 3 weeks prior to puberty and attain mating ability about 6 weeks after puberty. Age and body weight at puberty vary across breeds (Table 1), but scrotal circumference at puberty (an indicator of testes weight) remains constant at 28–29 cm. It is related to age, body weight and testes weight. Puberty is defined as the age at which a bull is first able to produce an ejaculate containing 50 million sperm with a minimum of 10% motility (capable of motion). A few bulls may be sterile, but most have fertility levels ranging from very high to very low. Nevertheless, a bull can be evaluated for breeding soundness and this information used to assess his potential fertility. It is not feasible to determine true fertility before a bull is used in the herd. Actual fertility levels are the result of a combination of genetic potential and environmental factors including nutrition, health, and cow and bull management. All of these results cause serious economic loss to the cow-calf producer.īull fertility is often measured by the percentage of cycling females exposed to the bull and impregnated during a specific time period (usually 60–90 days). Using a subfertile bull may lead to longer calving intervals, a lower number of calves produced and increased costs from wintering open females. Since individual bulls service many females, a deficiency in the breeding ability of one bull has a larger impact on herd productivity than fertility problems in a single female. A key component of efficient calf production is a high fertility level in each breeding animal in the herd. ![]() ![]() Throughout the night, there was a buzz of mutual admiration as people excitedly shared their process – from rolling scraps of magazine pages into beads, to hand-painting designs onto silk scarves to rescuing zippers from thrift stores and transforming them into flower brooches. For those that consider themselves artists in the kitchen, there was a cookie swap of all sorts of delicious treats (and lucky for the rest of us, plenty of extras to snack on throughout the night!). The diversity of mediums was incredible – purses made from crocheted plastic bags, hand-stamped holiday cards, etchings, charcoal drawings, hand-printed wrapping paper, ‘zines, photos, jewelry and so much more. On Tuesday night, after the Museum closed its doors to the public, staff, AmeriCorps members and volunteers gathered for our first annual “Museum Craftland.” Inspired by Providence’s popular downtown holiday sale, we transformed the Assembly Space into a celebration of our creative community and workplace.Īlmost 20 staff members came with creative work to show off, barter and sell, and many others came simply to shop and enjoy. It is kind of a secret, though, how we channel that creativity in our personal time. It’s no secret that members of the Providence Children's Museum staff community are a creative bunch – thinking up imaginative activities and programs and creative solutions for exhibits. This post was contributed by Carole Ann Penney, the Museum’s queen of all things crafty, who recently inspired us to celebrate our creations and the creative process. While I was setting up my studio, I thought it might be a nice idea to take the big chair along and put it in the Museum. There I had an actual studio in one of the rooms of the Museum and would welcome children into my studio to work with clay, my primary medium. Then an opportunity to work at the new Children's Museum in Pawtucket came along. I went mostly into schools and the local prison. This meant that I would design and implement art projects in educational institutions around the state. Not long after that I got a job at the RI State Council on the Arts as an Artist-in-Residence. Some would interact with her easily others were so scared they wouldn't come in our house. The children in the neighborhood would come over to our house to play and see her. She had a peaceful face with a smile that looked like the moon. With very little carpentry skills and some experience with sewing I had learned as a child, I proceeded to make a huge doll chair with plywood, fabric, and upholstery stuffing. My friend observed this and quietly said: "There are never enough laps to go around."Ī lightbulb went on in my head, and I decided to make a Lap Chair, where my children could go when they needed safety and security and I didn't have time to sit down with them. They were terrified of her and were seeking the only safety they knew. She and I were sitting in our kitchen while the children, ages 4 and 6 1/2, struggled to get into my lap. An older German friend was visiting at our home in Providence.
